Criteria
WATE PGR focuses on how the nominee has 'enhanced the student learning experience' and we ask nominators to consider how the postgraduate has:- motivated, inspired and engaged students;
- created a supportive learning environment that recognises diverse student needs.
Process
The Awards operate in two stages
Stage One (Nominations):
- Nominations may be submitted by both students and staff, following the awards criteria and guidance provided on each set of forms.
- Ensure that the relevant people have signed the nomination form if required to do so.
- Return the form to the the Academic Development Centre (second floor, Senate House) or via email (watepgr at warwick dot ac dot uk) by 26 February.
- A panel of judges drawn from across the University and chaired by Professor Christopher Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), will evaluate all stage one nominations and produce a shortlist of up to 10 nominees to proceed to stage two. All nominees will be contacted at this point to be informed of the outcome.
Stage Two (Shortlist)
- Shortlisted nominees will be invited to participate in stage two. All individuals shortlisted will be asked to complete and submit a Finalist Supporting Statement. Finalists who do not submit the Finalist Supporting Statement by the deadline will be removed from the Award process and the next eligible nominee asked to join.
- Finalist Supporting Statements should be no more than 1500 words and should address the awards criteria in more detail.
- Heads of Department will also need to provide a supporting statement of 300 to 500 words.
- All completed paperwork should be returned to the Academic Development Centre (second floor, Senate House) or via email (watepgr at warwick dot ac dot uk).
Winners will be notified of the panel's decision, which is binding and final, and the announcements will be made on this website and through Insite.
The Winners and Commendees will receive their awards at a celebration reception held later in the year.
As part of our commitment to raising the profile of teaching excellence in the University, Winners and Commendees will be expected to disseminate their teaching activities more widely in collaboration with ADC. The format of this is flexible, for example: short video interviews, articles, presentations at University events, facilitating workshops, etc. Any content generated may be added to the WATE PGR webpages and used in other publicity materials.

How to Nominate
Both University staff (all grades, all posts) and current students (foundation students, UG, PG) can nominate Warwick postgraduate research students (PGR) who meet the eligibility criteria. Staff and students are required to use different forms, as indicated on the WATE PGR Nominations page. Please ensure that you are filling out the correct nomination form: current University staff must fill in the 'WATE PGR Staff Nomination' form and current students the 'WATE PGR Student Nomination' form. Incorrect forms may not be accepted.
Individuals can make more than one nomination and nominees can be nominated by more than one person.
All nominations must be received by the closing date (26 February) as listed in the Awards Timetable.
Any questions regarding the nomination process or the eligibility of potential nominees or nominators should be directed to watepgr at warwick dot ac dot uk prior to the closing date.
Late nominations will not be accepted.
Terms
The Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence for Postgraduates who Teach process is chaired by Professor Christopher Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), and administered by the Academic Development Centre. WATE PGR is supported by a selection panel comprised of individuals drawn from across the University. All decisions made through the process are final.
All nominations will be treated in strictest confidence and names of nominators will not be shared with nominees.
Awards
The Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence for Postgraduates who Teach distributes the following award amounts by transferring budget to departments:- Winners (up to five) receive £500 each
- Commendees (up to five) receive £200 each
Funds are provided directly to the Winner or Commendee's department (or substantive or 'home' department in the case of joint/cross appointments). Budget will be made available in the first quarter of the financial year following the award and must be spent by the end of that financial year.
Additionally, WATE PGR Winners and Commendees will receive their award certificates at a celebration reception (see the Award Timetable for when the Celebration is scheduled).
Awards money may only be spent on supporting the Winner or Commendee's development as a teacher, in accordance with the University's financial regulations and procedures. If Winners or Commendees leave the University in the year after receiving their Award, the Award funds remain at Warwick. They cannot be transfered to other institutions or provided to individuals.
Please note that all equipment, etc., purchased using WATE PGR funds remains the property of the University.
