Butterworth Prize for Nick Monk

The winners of the 2008/09 Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence have been announced. This award provides recognition for people who teach, or support student learning at the University of Warwick.

One of the successful nominees was Nick Monk, CAPITAL Research Fellow, who has been honoured with the Butterworth Prize, the Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence given specifically to recognise early career excellence.

In order to evaluate and theorise the work of the CAPITAL Centre Nick has applied its principles and strategies in practice, introducing a new module in the English Department, Drama, Performance and Identity post 1955; a performance-based Shakespeare course for the Centre for Lifelong Learning; kinaesthetic workshops for Chemistry, Cultural Policy Studies, Medicine. He has made it his mission to reach out across the disciplines to break down the 'silo' mentality so prevalent in universities at present and to foster creativity in academic colleagues and students throughout the University.

Lost Interpretations of Hamlet

The culmination of a year-long project led by CAPITAL's Artist in Residence, freelance theatre director Tom Cornford, and involving a group of Warwick University students, the project has been exploring the text through the productions of Stanislavski and Gordon Craig (1912), Michael Chekhov (1924), and the planned, but never created, versions of Meyerhold and Tarkovsky. This is a unique, one-off presentation, including a performance of an abridged-version of the play, infused with the techniques of these practitioners learnt, and a discussion of the work led Professor Tony Howard.  CAPITAL Centre Studio, 7pm, Tuesday 21 April. Admission is free. Apply to h.j.neal@warwick.ac.uk  for tickets.
