Performing Shakespeare's Venice: Summer School

STOP PRESS:
Please note that the deadline for applications has been extended until Sunday 17th January 2010

The University of Warwick offers students majoring in humanities, literature or drama an international Shakespeare summer school 11 July - 6 August 2010.

For the first three weeks students will be based at the CAPITAL Centre at the University of Warwick which offers innovative teaching and learning spaces. There will be regular visits to the library and archive of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon which houses the archive of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a world-class collection of books and documents relating to Shakespeare. The work developed in these three weeks will be focused on the final week when the course will transfer to Warwick’s research and teaching centre in Venice, the Palazzo Pesaro-Papafava.

Performing Shakespeare's Venice will:

* introduce students to Shakespeare performance research using the methodology of open space teaching and learning developed at the CAPITAL Centre.
* offer workshops, seminars and lectures delivered by internationally respected scholars.
* explore this work in key locations for the study of Shakespeare's work on stage and in its cultural context.

The course will first locate one or more early modern plays set in Venice (Shakespeare’s Othello and The Merchant of Venice, Ben Jonson’s Volpone) in the performance archives that document their stage life in London and Stratford and then in the city and culture that frame their debates. Workshops will be delivered by Warwick academics and theatre practitioners. Teaching will be supported by guest lectures and cultural trips to support the course, including visits to Royal Shakespeare Company productions, to the Globe Theatre in London, the Shakespeare Houses in Stratford-upon-Avon, and in Venice, to the Ghetto and other sites of Shakespearian interest.
