Apple: GPU Architecture and Modelling
Location: CS1.04
The GPU is a key component of virtually all modern SOCs. Its architecture is continuously evolving to meet fast changing user and system requirements.
This fast pace of evolution is both a challenge and opportunity for SOC design at Apple as we aim for the ultimate in features, performance, and efficiency on tight schedules.
We will present the typical architecture of a GPU and describe its functional pipeline, focusing on vertex, rasterization, fragment stages and shaders.
We will introduce some key concepts of modelling and discuss how modelling is used as a key part of the design and development cycle from early architectural design exploration, functional verification, and performance/power signoff for silicon tapeout.
