How does the competition work?

By filling in the form on this page by Monday 1st April 2019 you will be entering our internal competition, and we will decide whether to submit your business for the Entrepreneurship Awards. The competition will then progress by the following stages:

Stage 1

You and your idea
We can submit a maximum of two student businesses for this competition. If yours is selected, we will help you put together an application. You will need to provide a two-minute video outlining the idea for your business, how it came about, and how winning the competition would help it to grow. You will also need to complete a business model canvas (using this template and these guidelines provided by Santander). We will submit your application to Santander by the deadline of Thursday 25th April.

Stage 2

Understanding your business

If your application is successful, you will be invited to present your business idea to a panel of judges at one of the three regional heats in June. You will have five minutes to present, followed by a five-minute Q&A session. Up to 12 businesses will then be selected to progress to the final stage. These businesses will receive £500 of seed funding and secure a place at the national final. A further six businesses will also be selected by the audience at the regional heats in June and will compete for a separate People’s Choice prize at the final. All entries that do not progress at this stage will receive a certificate congratulating them on being shortlisted and a start-up gift set.

Stage 3

Growing your business: the accelerator week

Those who reach this stage of the competition will be invited to attend an accelerator week in August which will provide them with a unique educational experience led by a series of innovative businesses and speakers. During this week finalists will participate in a series of workshops and masterclasses aimed at helping you understand how to get the most from your business. This information will also help inform the presentation you will deliver at the final in London. Santander will provide expenses for finalists, and will run a pitch training session during the summer for all finalists.

The National Final

The last part of the competition will be the national final, which will take place in October at an exclusive venue in London. Teams will deliver a five-minute presentation followed by a six-minute Q&A session. The judging panel for this event will include high-profile entrepreneurs, leading academics, Santander executives, and business leaders. Following the presentations the judges will select two winners and two runners up.

The two winning businesses will receive:

  • £25,000 of equity-free seed funding
  • Mentoring from business experts
  • A fully-funded intern
  • A £500 digital growth voucher from Talent Cupboard

The two runners up will receive:

  • £15,000 of equity-free seed funding
  • Mentoring from business experts
  • A fully-funded intern
  • A £500 digital growth voucher from Talent Cupboard

People’s Choice
The six People’s Choice businesses chosen at the regional heats will pitch in front of the audience at the national final and the winning business will receive:

  • £7,500 of equity-free seed funding
  • A fully-funded intern
