My enterprise project

My enterprise skills & motivations

Sheen Decoration is dedicated to the design, sales and after-sales service of outstanding glassware from China. To cater for local design and market requirements, I established the company in the United Kingdom.

I first came to the UK in 2008 and visited British glassware manufacturers. I found that manufacturing of glassware in China and in the United Kingdom are complementary. Glassware production in the UK has more automation and innovation, but has decreased overall due to high energy, labour and investment costs. While glassware production in China is labour intensive, it is a large and growing industry which is supported by the government.

During my enterprise project, I learnt many new business skills; such as negotiation, active listening, decision making and multitasking. I transferred my academic skills to my business so it could operate more efficiently and effectively.

Problems arise all the time while running an enterprise. As the company director, I have to face and solve those difficulties. Fortunately, I enjoy the problem solving process.

I learnt that at the beginning you should have an excellent business plan and that you should properly use your limited resources. While managing your enterprise, details and attitude are vital for determining success or failure.

My enterprise support

My enterprise reflections & visions

Warwick offers plenty of assistance for my enterprise. As a result, my business idea transformed into a more reliable and feasible business plan.

Warwick provided crucial tutorials on company registration and taxation, employment law and the legal requirements of intellectual property.

It is very useful to meet other Warwick students engaged in enterprise. The opportunities to communicate with others is helpful for resource and information sharing. And from my discussions with more established entrepreneurs, I learnt many business operation and management skills.

So my enterprise develops, I will apply the business skills I have acquired and continue learning some more.

I definitely encourage students get their own enterprise moving. My tips for enterprising students are that they should always know their profit model and that they balance risk with time, cost and quality.

Currently, we are negotiating business with some local whisky distilleries. During the next 3 – 6 months, I will take part in tradeshows and exhibitions to improve awareness of Sheen Decoration and to discover more Whisky Distilleries. I’ll attend the Whisky show, (NEC Birmingham) and the Great British Business Show (Kensington Olympia).
