ECF and EUTOPIA-SIF Fellows Welcome, Induction and Social Event
6th October 2022 | from 12:00
Location: IAS Seminar Room C0.02
With the IAS Team
We warmly invite all new ECFs and SIF 2 Fellows to join us for an In-person Welcome to the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) on Thursday 6th of October from midday at the IAS Seminar Room. We are marking the start of term by holding a Networking Lunch, Induction and a social at the IAS. This event will be your opportunity to hear from the IAS Team about how our programmes and schemes will run in the academic year 22/23 and for you to ask us any questions you may have.
Introduction to Research Fellowships
13th October 2022 | 13:00 - 15:00
Location: IAS Seminar Room C0.02
With John Burden, IAS
This session will look at developing your research through an externally funded research fellowship and why this can be an important route to a permanent academic position. The session will look at what a fellowship is, who is funding them, what the funders are looking for in an applicant and what makes a good application.
Athena Professional Workshop: You & Your Ideal Job
20th October 2022 | 13:00 - 15:00
Location: IAS Seminar Room C0.02
With Nicola Jones, Athena Professional
Working with expectation and aspiration, we will help fellows to think about what they want to achieve and give them some practical insight into how they can help themselves to get there. In particular, we will invite fellows to consider how to make the most of the programme and their on-going work to generate evidence of capability in order to make future job applications.
IAS Exchanges Journal AMA (Ask Me Anything)
27th October 2022 | 13:00 - 15:00
Location: IAS Seminar Room C0.02
With Dr Gareth J Johnson, IAS
The return of this popular and highly-interactive session, structured around YOUR questions. Hosted by Exchanges’ genial editor-in-chief, Dr Gareth J Johnson, come and learn more about the journal from a unique behind the scenes perspective. Crucially, attendees will be able to pitch their questions to Gareth too. So, if you ever wondered what goes into a special issue, how much word counts really matter, is reviewer ‘2’ always a beast or even how you could get involved as contributor: this session is for you!
Athena Professional Workshop: Being a great collaborator; raising self-awareness and the ability to work with others effectively
3rd November 2022 | 13:00 - 15:00
Location: IAS Seminar Room C0.02
With Nicola Jones, Athena Professional
Collaboration is a key part of academic life in the 21st C. There is also a social and moral imperative for academia to provide an inclusive environment in which people from a range of backgrounds with a variety of life experience can participate. Learning to work with difference in order to attain a shared purpose is essential and can be hugely creative, fruitful and fulfilling.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships: Hear from Awardees at Warwick
17th November 2022 | 13:00 - 15:30
Location: Online via Teams
With Dr John Burden, Dr Diana Palacio Lozana, Dr Amanda Wilson and Dr Xiaona Wang
This session will be split into two parts. The first half of the session will be delivered by Dr John Burden who will provide you with key information about what a Leverhulme Fellowship is and how to apply for them. In the second half, you will hear from Dr Diana Palacio Lozana and Dr Amanda Wilson who are both Leverhulme awardees. They will give a quick introduction to their research and experience of having a Leverhulme Fellowship. This will be a panel-style session where you will be about to ask Diana and Amanda questions about the fellowship process.
This session should provide you with a deeper understanding of the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship scheme from award holders. The majority of the session will be shaped around the dilemmas and questions you put forward, but indicative topics that may be covered include advice on the planning and writing of the fellowship application and how to maximise opportunities and consolidate research during a fellowship.
InReach10x Seminar
1st December 2022 | 12:00 - 14:00
Location: L5 Lecture theatre Science Concourse
Talk by Pier-Emmanuel Tremblay
Cosmo-chronology in our neighbourhood of stars and planets
The volume of space within 300 light years from the Sun, a small portion of our own galaxy the Milky Way, contains the brightest specimens of almost all types of stars and planets, but surprisingly it remains poorly explored. The main reason is that most stellar objects in a fixed space volume are small and very faint, most of them being long-lived red stars about 10% of the mass of the Sun, dead stars named "white dwarfs" and rocky Earth-like exoplanets. The spacecraft Gaia from the European Space Agency has provided, for the first time in 2018, a near complete census of stars and white dwarfs within 300 light years, but a full understanding of the local stellar population is still a major challenge. My group at the University of Warwick is leading an ambitious project to improve our knowledge of stellar and planetary evolution using the local space volume. Our novel approach is based on follow-up multi-object spectroscopic observations and state-of-the-art stellar modelling from three-dimensional fluid hydrodynamics. The goal is to unlock the enormous potential of using local stars as cosmic clocks to trace the local stellar and planet formation history for our galaxy. I will discuss the recently discovered signature of old rocky planets that were formed when the Milky Way was still a very young galaxy (10% of the current age of the Universe), in a metal-poor environment that was quite different to when our solar system was formed.
Research Snapshot and End of Term Social
8th December 2022 | 12:00 - 17:00
Location: IAS Seminar Room C0.02 and IAS Common Room C0.06
With the IAS Team
This event will give our Fellows the opportunity to present a snapshot of their research to the IAS community. Each fellow will have 2 minutes and one slide to communicate their work in an ‘elevator pitch’ style presentation. Each session will be followed with questions to encourage innovative conversation, networking and potential collaboration between research disciplines. The audience will have the chance to vote for their favourite talk, with the winner of the Research Snapshot Event receiving a prize which will be awarded during the end of term social.
