This is a list of Accolade support and training events taking place during the Autumn Term only. All the in-person sessions this term will be held in the IAS department with the exception of our InReach^10x Seminar series. The events held in the IAS will all follow a networking lunch that will run from 12:00 - 13:00 in IAS Common Room C0.06.

ECF and EUTOPIA-SIF Fellows Welcome, Induction and Social Event

This event will be your opportunity to hear from the IAS Team about how our programmes and schemes will run in the academic year 22/23 and for you to ask us any questions you may have.

Introduction to Research Fellowships

Working with expectation and aspiration, we will help fellows to think about what they want to achieve and give them some practical insight into how they can help themselves to get there. Athena Professional Workshop: Being a great collaborator; raising self-awareness and the ability to work with others effectively

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships: Hear from Awardees at Warwick

This session will be split into two parts. The first half of the session will be delivered by Dr John Burden who will provide you with key information about what a Leverhulme Fellowship is and how to apply for them. In the second half, you will hear from Dr Diana Palacio Lozana and Dr Amanda Wilson who are both Leverhulme awardees. They will give a quick introduction to their research and experience of having a Leverhulme Fellowship. This will be a panel-style session where you will be about to ask Diana and Amanda questions about the fellowship process.

This session should provide you with a deeper understanding of the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship scheme from award holders. The majority of the session will be shaped around the dilemmas and questions you put forward, but indicative topics that may be covered include advice on the planning and writing of the fellowship application and how to maximise opportunities and consolidate research during a fellowship.

InReach^10x Seminar

Cosmo-chronology in our neighbourhood of stars and planets

The volume of space within 300 light years from the Sun, a small portion of our own galaxy the Milky Way, contains the brightest specimens of almost all types of stars and planets, but surprisingly it remains poorly explored. The main reason is that most stellar objects in a fixed space volume are small and very faint, most of them being long-lived red stars about 10% of the mass of the Sun, dead stars named "white dwarfs" and rocky Earth-like exoplanets. The spacecraft Gaia from the European Space Agency has provided, for the first time in 2018, a near complete census of stars and white dwarfs within 300 light years, but a full understanding of the local stellar population is still a major challenge. My group at the University of Warwick is leading an ambitious project to improve our knowledge of stellar and planetary evolution using the local space volume. Our novel approach is based on follow-up multi-object spectroscopic observations and state-of-the-art stellar modelling from three-dimensional fluid hydrodynamics. The goal is to unlock the enormous potential of using local stars as cosmic clocks to trace the local stellar and planet formation history for our galaxy. I will discuss the recently discovered signature of old rocky planets that were formed when the Milky Way was still a very young galaxy (10% of the current age of the Universe), in a metal-poor environment that was quite different to when our solar system was formed.

Research Snapshot and End of Term Social

This event will give our Fellows the opportunity to present a snapshot of their research to the IAS community. Each fellow will have 2 minutes and one slide to communicate their work in an ‘elevator pitch’ style presentation. Each session will be followed with questions to encourage innovative conversation, networking and potential collaboration between research disciplines. The audience will have the chance to vote for their favourite talk, with the winner of the Research Snapshot Event receiving a prize which will be awarded during the end of term social.
