Exchanges AMA

With Dr Gareth J Johnson, Managing Editor-in-Chief, Exchanges.

Everything you wanted to ask about scholar-led open access publishing and IAS' Exchanges journal but were afraid to ask.

‘What’s unique about Exchanges and why does it matter?’

‘Why does publishing take so long sometimes?’

‘What are the three best ways to really annoy an editor?’

In this interactive (relatively), inspirational (possibly) and interrogative (highly) session, Managing Editor-in-Chief, and scholarly publishing maven and lapsed iconoclast, Dr Gareth J Johnson, offers attendees a unique opportunity to probe his publishing expertise and knowledge.

Aimed at early career and established researchers, the 30-minute session will embrace an audience-guided structure. Bring your enquiring mind, burning concerns, or just a desire to learn more about the Exchanges journal.

To submit a question ahead of the session, please mail exchangesjournal@warwick.ac.uk, or simply ask it on the day.

    Accolade Workshop: Communication and Influencing

    With Athena Professional

In this interactive session we will explore the skills needed to works with others effectively, with particular emphasis on communication and influencing skills.

How can we ensure that we play our part in making positive communication possible? And how can we “manage up” without annoying or competing with others? In this interactive session we will work through some communication challenges and consider some strategies for playing our part effectively. There is no “fairy dust” or magic formula for making working relationships a success, especially during a pandemic crisis. We can, however, learn ways to self-manage which can help, and at the very least enable us to do our best.

At the end of this session participants will have:

    • Reflected on their evidence-based approach to career development
    • Discussed the importance of rapport in human relationships and identified ways to establish and build rapport with colleagues
    • Explored strategies for influencing colleagues and “managing up” when appropriate

Whether feedback is positive or challenging, what are the things that make it more likely to be well-received by your students? How do you actually say what needs to be said? And how do you sustain the supervisor-supervisee relationship once feedback has been delivered?

We will also discuss when and how to be facilitative. Is it always the right approach?

At the end of this session participants will have:

    • Discussed why feedback matters
    • Demonstrated use of a feedback model to:
      • Endorse positive behaviour
      • Challenge behaviour
    • Considered when a facilitative approach is appropriate
    • Identified what a facilitative approach looks like
