Using the Accolade Programme to Support Your Next Career Step
With Sarah Penny, IAS Programme Manager
In this session you will be introduced to the Accolade Programme for 21/22 and the academic careers and leadership development strands that underpin it. You will be asked to reflect on and share your plans for professional development this academic year in small groups. We will explore Accolade Working Groups for 21/22 and how they will support your learning. We will explore Accolade resources and how you can use them to support your individual reflection and to generate evidence of competencies you develop throughout the year.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Find and access Accolade Programme and event information.
- Describe the value of the Accolade Programme
- Create your own record of evidence of your own professional learning
- Reflect on your development journey
This introductory session will be followed by a break and the first Accolade Working Group Meetings of the year (see below).

This is an opportunity to consolidate your learning within the Accolade programme in smaller groups; to connect with and support one another and collaborate through the exchange of knowledge, resources and experiences.

- Introduce yourself and your research
- Meet your new working group members
- Share your fellowship goals this term and discuss areas of mutual interest and priority
- Decide how you want this group to function and the areas you’d like to focus on as a group
- Agree on a plan or agenda for the next meeting
You and Your Ideal Job

Working with expectation and aspiration, we will help fellows to think about what they want to achieve and give them some practical insight into how they can help themselves to get there. In particular, we will invite fellows to consider how to make the most of the programme and their on-going work to generate evidence of capability in order to make future job applications.
Learning Outcomes
- Engage with peers using interactive virtual tools
- Identify their ideal job, their current position, and what steps & strategies they can take to achieve their goals.
- Understand how to evidence capability and why it matters.
- Consider their own behavioural preferences and how they affect their approach.
Knowing your Strengths
With Anne Wilson, Head of Careers, University of Warwick
Whether you remain in academia or move into employment in other sectors, there will be many times when you are asked what you do. You’ll need to be able to explain succinctly what your research is about to lay people who won’t understand academic terminology or technical jargon. When you have a job interview, you may have a maximum of 60 seconds to convey not only what you do but why your research matters and its impact. In those 60 seconds you’ll also need to convey your enthusiasm to make what you say compelling to your listener, so they want to learn more. To do this well requires you to play to your strengths so that you come across authentically.
This workshop on strengths comes in two parts. This session (Part I) will explore your strengths and how you can draw on them when preparing and delivering a pitch.

- Recognise your unique Strengths
- Apply your Strengths to enhance your Pitch
- Present your research compellingly in 60 seconds

The majority of the session will be shaped around the dilemmas and questions you put forward, but indicative topics that may be covered include:
- Advice on the planning and writing of the fellowship application
- how to maximise opportunities and consolidate research during a fellowship
Public Engagement: Finding Your Audience

This Engagement is about universities working with those outside academia to share research, collaborate on ideas, and make knowledge accessible to all. It is about inviting in more voices, and being a role model for the next generation. Through it both we and our audiences gain valuable interaction and dialogue – working together for a fairer (and arguably better) society. But who are our audiences? How do we create engaging and impactful interactions with the different groups we want to work with? Join Fellows from Warwick Institute of Engagement for a conversation about the audiences you want to engage.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand what public engagement is
- Understand how to define audiences
- Explore options for targeting content towards different audiences

Articulating your Strengths

Being a Great Collaborator; Raising self-awareness and the ability to work with others effectively

Collaboration is a key part of academic life in the 21st C. There is also a social and moral imperative for academia to provide an inclusive environment in which people from a range of backgrounds with a variety of life experience can participate. Learning to work with difference in order to attain a shared purpose is essential and can be hugely creative, fruitful and fulfilling.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Find ways to use their behavioural strengths to support their careers
- Value diverse experience and perspectives especially in collaborative work
- Collaborate effectively with others who may not share their perspective
