Accolade and EUTOPIA-SIF Event: Developing Your Publication Strategy
Online via Zoom
Chaired by Dr Gareth J Johnson, IAS
Publishing: There are thousands of opinions in the academy about what works, what doesn’t and how you can approach it in a coherent and more successful manner. Developing your own publication strategy alongside the preparation of your publication outputs is a key yet easily overlooked aspect of the publishing process. We will be joined by a panel of scholars who will share their insights about this diverse, often frustrating, but ultimately crucial area of academic life. By exploring their diverse experiences and perspectives on creating and supporting others in the production of publication outputs, we intend to support your publication decision-making and planning. This event will be shaped around your interests and questions. You are invited to share any questions with the panel chair in advance via this FORM. Please add your questions by the 3rd May 2022. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions during the session too.
Learning Outcomes:
· To consider different questions and approaches to the development of a publication strategy.
· To reflect on the best publication options for your research, and for you as a researcher.
The majority of the session will be shaped around the dilemmas and questions you put forward, but indicative topics that may be covered include:
· The number of publications vs. the quality of your publication history
· How to decide upon the correct channel/s to reach your intended audience
· Advice on coping with publication timescales

Her professional research experiences have led to expertise in families, youth, higher education, gender and global intersectional inequalities. Her doctoral thesis at University of Warwick explored how families are involved in the gendered educational trajectories in India.
Michele Underwood, Researcher Development Manager, University of Warwick
Starting my career in Outdoor Education I worked to enable individuals to thrive and push themselves; accept their strengths and weaknesses; meet challenges and help others do the same; gain knowledge, understanding and empathy. I have continued this approach with my work as a Researcher Developer
Underpinning my work is working with individuals as collaborative partners in their learning process My approach to design and delivery of their learning programme allows for them to learn when they need to; understands that they are self-directed and internally motivated; that they bring prior experience and knowledge; and their learning must be relevant and collaborative. It is essential that they learn from experience, and that the process incorporates the basis for observation and reflection. In my current role I offer training to 3000 PhD researchers and support their Supervisors.
My study and practise as a coach and counsellor allow me to create challenge and a supportive environment in which people are actively engaged in their development. My goal, therefore, is to facilitate that conversation; challenging and supporting participants, and enabling them to think courageously and creatively. As an active researcher, I am able to utilise my current practise to inform my delivery of support and development to researchers whatever their stage of career. Experiencing the same challenges of researching, writing and publishing and managing a research team allows me to draw upon current practise and learning to inform.

Hybrid; Teams and IAS Seminar Room
Facilitated by Early Career Teaching Fellows, Josh Patel & Théo Aiolfi.
Josh and Theo are Early Career Teaching Fellows at the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) and the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS). Josh’s doctoral research explored how changes in British higher education policy and pedagogy were informed by the wider context of post-war liberalism. Theo’s research developed an interdisciplinary definition of populism as a political style as an open-ended repertoire of political performances that articulate various conception of ‘the people’.
In this session, we will lead discussion and reflection on how we as a group approach our teaching (including leading seminars, demonstrating, lecturing, and other forms of facilitating learning). The aim will be to have a conversation about some strengths and weaknesses of our approaches, think about collectively how we might learn from each other’s experiences, and the opportunities or challenges of interdsiciplainary teaching that we don't know. Drawing from each other's experience we hope we can create together some useful hints and tips and all come away with a sense of our strengths as teachers!
In this session you will:
- Share experience of teaching
- Conduct a short statement of your teaching philosophy
- Think about how to reflect on teaching
