Warwick wins funding for Rutherford Strategic International Fellowships

The Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) and International Strategy & Relations have secured funding from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), in a programme managed by Universities UK International, to establish the Rutherford Strategic International Fellowships scheme. This will provide a new mechanism to enhance our international partnerships and contribute to their future sustainability by investing in the training and development of the next generation of academic leaders.

The Rutherford Strategic International Fellowships programme will enable twelve Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to spend up to three months at Warwick in order to catalyse long-term interdisciplinary collaborations and undertake training activities to support their career development.

The IAS supports researchers at Warwick to advance new research ideas characterised by interdisciplinarity, innovation and internationalisation; it has a long history of international academic collaboration and developing ECRs as future academic leaders. While developing their own interdisciplinary research ideas, the Rutherford Fellows will be able to join the existing ECR community in the IAS as they train to be future research leaders.

The Rutherford Funding will support collaboration with three strategic partners;

  • Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil)
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China)
  • University Paris Seine (France)

In addition Warwick will support further fellows from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium)

Warwick is committed to being a leading global research and teaching institution with an international outlook. We believe in the value of building mutually beneficial partnerships which give our academics a foundation for collaboration in research and teaching, and our students the opportunity to broaden their international perspective. We have chosen to work with three strategic partner institutions for the Rutherford Fund where we can extend existing research activity and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration.

The University of Warwick has a strong track record of academic collaboration and student exchange with China. Over the last five years Warwick has been building closer interactions with SJTU, particularly in areas of mutual strength in humanities subjects and linguistics. Since 2011 Warwick has been engaging at an institutional level with Brazil as an emerging Latin American and international research leader. Whilst the majority of Warwick's activity to date has been in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, we are now nurturing our research links and building a burgeoning partnership with the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Warwick has a strong history of engagement in Europe and we continue to work hard to further develop the University’s research network and profile. A series of academic discussions have revealed multiple opportunities for collaboration with University Paris Seine and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

  Professor Simon Swain, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement) said; “We are looking forward to using this award to strengthen our collaborations by welcoming talented Early Career Researchers to Warwick and benefiting from the complementary skills and synergistic approaches they will bring, adding depth to new and existing projects

Professor Peter Scott, Director Institute of Advanced Study said; “The IAS is committed to the internationalisation of research and developing the next generation of research leaders. This funding allows us to build on our existing programmes for Early Career Researchers and at the same time support long term, international research collaborations with Warwick’s strategic partners which will benefit both Warwick and the fellows in the long-term”.
