    Merchant of Vembley post-show discussion

    Two weeks ago, David was invited by the Rented Space Company to lead an after-show discussion about their adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, adapted into the modern Merchant of Vembley. Shakespeare’s play is transposed from early modern Venice to present-day London—specifically the Asian communities of Wembley—with the original conflict between Jew and Christian turned into a battle between Hindu and Muslim.

    Update: Global Shakespeare Undergraduate Module at Queen Mary

    We’re only five weeks into the Autumn 2015 term at QM, and already students are requesting to register for our upcoming undergraduate Global Shakespeare courses—not only for Spring 2016, but for Autumn 2016 as well!
    Class discussions of Titus Andronicus and Othello on stage and on screen have been lively this term, and we’re taking advantage of the cultural scene in London to complement the syllabus. So far, students taking the module have attended a performance of Measure for Measure at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and watched a screening of Macbeth at Rich Mix Cinema. And last week, the group displayed their acting talents staging the gory banquet scene from Titus in class.

    Director's Seminar: Reflections on the ‘global’ for ‘Global Shakespeare’

    Sandra Young will present a talk and lead a discussion on the category of the ‘global’ in cultural studies, reflecting on the ambivalences and possibilities of the global view, particularly for Global Shakespeare studies. She will examine the early iterations of Global Shakespeare and invite us to consider whether the idea of the ‘global’ in ‘global south’ carries the same resonance as the ‘global’ in ‘globalization’.
