Romeo & Juliet in Kosovo and Serbia

The breakup of Yugoslavia and the ensuing conflict in the 1990s tore communities apart along religious, ethnic and linguistic lines. Kosovo became a site of destruction and despair, with the Albanian population and other minorities suffering ethnic cleansing under Serbian rule. Reconciliation is hard to come by - Kosovo declared Independence in 2008 but its statehood remains unrecognised by Serbia. Now, a new production of 'Romeo and Juliet' in Albanian and Serbian, with actors from Kosovo and Serbia speaking both languages, has won support from the governments of Serbia and Kosovo. Global Shakespeare Research Fellow Preti Taneja has been documenting the production from the initial announcement through rehearsals to final performances in Belgrade and Pristina - she talked about the play on Radio 3's flagship programme 'Free Thinking' at 2200 on Tuesday 26th May. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05wjc9j
