Organic Living Spaces in North Eastern Brazil

This project was the outcome of a number of different influences which fuelled Joseph Brandim-Howson's desire to both interact with and map somewhat, an alternative approach to the complex concept of, 'the city'. At the heart of the project was an attempt to document and celebrate ways of existing and creating identities which take place outside of formal, regulated processes. In particular this piece focuses on the ways of existing and identity creation which are allied to the production and maintenance of a living space, a home. In offering this photo-essay I hope to take the experience of those of Nova Esperanca (new hope), Teresina, provide academic context and ponder what their experiences provide for a wider discussion on the city, the lived environment, identity and alternative forms of home-making.
