As the funds we award are generally for projects related to teaching, we would encourage you in the first instance to try and think of ways around having to buy yourself out of teaching. For example, could you employ an assistant who could help you both with your project and with your teaching, rather than someone to take over your teaching entirely while you concentrate on your project?
We do recognise, however, that sometimes the only way of securing enough time to work on your project is by buying yourself out of your teaching. Therefore we thought it would be useful to provide a guide on how to cost this as part of your proposal.
The important thing to remember is that IATL does not reimburse the hourly rate of the person being bought out; instead we pay for the actual cost to your department of the replacement teaching.
An applicant at Reader level FA8/SP 51 wishes to buy himself out of 2 hours’ small-group teaching per week for 10 weeks. His hourly rate is £29.3772 which would equate to £587.54.
However, the department employs a Teaching Fellow to cover these classes at a rate of £21.59 per hour. Therefore the cost to the department is £21.59 x 20 = £431.80, and this is what should be included on the project budget.
An applicant at professorial level FA9 wishes to buy herself out of four hour-long lectures and eight small-group teaching hours. Her hourly rate is £44.05 which would equate to £528.60.
Again, the department employs a Teaching Fellow to cover these classes. He is paid £57.34 per hour for the lectures and £21.59 for the small-group teaching. Therefore the cost to the department is (£57.34 x 4) + (21.59 x 8) = £402.08, and this is what should be included on the project budget.
A reasonable number of hours for other teaching-related activity, e.g. sessions devoted to essay planning or feedback on assessment, may also be included: we recognise that not all these things can be covered by the standard ‘preparation time’ which is included in the University rates.
The University’s rates for part-time teachers may be found at http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/humanresources/payroll/salscalescurrent/ptt/
