Students as Leaders: A Campus of Ideas

This project aims to facilitate student-led research into developing innovative learning outcomes and partnerships in the context of a new module proposal. Estates, students and IATL will work together, in itself an innovative collaboration with wide reaching implications. The project is unique and builds on research and activities already carried out by an interdisciplinary group of students to construct an Eco-Centre, a sustainable low-impact building on campus.

The project team will comprise of core student researchers and Engineers Without Borders UK alongside key stakeholders from Estates and an external architect. There will also be academic support from IATL and the researchers will work with a wide range of relevant parties including, importantly, other students.

This project will have key strategic pedagogic impact in both its outcomes and what will be learnt from the process:

  • Exploring how student-led module development can take place — a first for Warwick which has potential for wide reaching impact on wider curriculum development;
  • Demonstrating collaborative thinking and encouraging the dismantling of "silo" constraints within the University;
  • Inspiring students and teachers and challenging existing epistemologies including bridging the often binary relationship between Estates and academia;
  • Providing practical experience to stakeholders of engagement and project management, which are key employability skills to complement traditional pedagogy;
  • Embedding of more collaborative and innovative practices, processes and partnerships through student facilitation.

This project will enable students to be more engaged with their learning, not only enhancing the student experience for those directly involved but impacting more widely on how other students are engaged. The learning outcomes will shape new ideas about how the University operates, opening up new opportunities for students and the community in general.

The Energy and Sustainability Team work across the University community to make campus more efficient and reduce our impact on the environment. Joel Cardinal is the Head of Energy and Sustainability and leads the University's sustainable development. Judi Kilgallon joined the team in December 2014 as a Sustainability Champion and focuses on engagement and communication with staff and students.
