Pericles is a play about being a play. Narrated by the author of the poem it's based on it alternately glories in, compromises with and apologises for its own theatrical nature. It covers almost 20 years and thousands of miles. It involves ups and downs, moments of fairytale coincidence surrounded by moments of horrific darkness. We only have a bad copy of it left. So what better play to use to rip up Shakespeare and start again.
