Developing excellence in teaching and learning
This course represents practice and research-driven advancements that have been incubated and implemented by academics, practioners and departments across the university.
The Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) at Warwick is central to supporting these developments, and the delivery of the course is based upon approaches that have been supported and nurtured through IATL. Principal approaches will include:
- Interdisciplinary by Nature
- Student as Producer
- Open Space Learning.
Key Learning Methodologies
This list is not exhaustive, but will give you some guidance on the type of tools that are used to ensure your learning is deep and accelerated
Interdisciplinary by nature
Interdisciplinarity is bringing together unique expertise from multiple disciplines- enabling groups to approach problems from a holistic perspective.
As you interact in interdisciplinary contexts, you will develop a greater ability to converse and interact with multiple perspectives. This will develop your capacity to think critically and intelligently when approaching complex global issues.
Student as Producer
This course will require you to be active in creating new knowledge and solutions based upon what you are learning, as opposed to being a passive receiver of information.
Practically speaking, this means that in many modules you will define your own assessment and grading requirements based upon how you will learn most effectively.
Open Space Learning (OSL)
OSL puts students on the same level as the expert by encouraging them to see themselves as co-creators in new knowledge and understanding.
Experts' knowledge is still critical towards student development, but OSL ensures that the learning doesn't stop at passive receiving, but requires active creation as a result.
Flexibility – study part time or full time
Making time for work, family, and friends is important, so take advantage of our flexibility. Each module will run intensively over one week and can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis, giving you the flexibility to choose how you study.
Typically a few weeks before each module, learning materials will be provided for you to engage with the content in your preferred learning style allowing you space to apply your expertise to the subject area. Face-to-face teaching over the one week then gives you the opportunity to discuss and apply theories within the classroom.
During the week you will participate in lectures, seminars, workshops and fieldwork, depending on your module selection. You’ll have the chance to carry on the conversations outside of the classroom and feel a real sense of camaraderie through your shared experience. After teaching has finished, you will have a number of weeks to complete assessments and prepare for the next module.
We admit a limited number of students because our teaching is delivered in small groups and requires intensive input from our academics.
