Science, Scientists and Feminism: How do you do what you do?
Friday 14 June, 3 – 5pm
Wolfson Research Exchange
See Katharina's blog post reflecting on this event.
At this event, three scientists presented the ways in which they have (or have not) incorporated feminism into their science work at interpersonal, political and theoretical levels. They discussed what feminism and science meant to them both as women and as practitioners.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear about these women's science careers and the ways in which their science is informed by feminism. Is feminism an integral part of their science? If so, how - and if not, why not? The presenters spoke openly about feminism and their work –their successes and frustrations, how they have managed their approaches and how they have aspired to be feminist in their work.
Speakers included:
Professor Patricia Murphy: Professor of Pedagogy and Assessment at the Open University with a focus on STEM subjects
Dr Jacky Lawrence: Head of Warwick County Council’s Energy Team, where she is responsible for developing and implementing the county’s Energy Policy for properties. She was previously head of the Climate Change Team.
Katerina Pateraki: Assistant Lecturer in Humanitarian Engineering; she specialises in emergency planning of natural disasters, health and humanitarian assistance, and will be drawing on her experiences in the field.
The discussion was facilitated by Dr Gaynor Sharp, a chemist, feminist, artist and STEM Ambassador.
