It's Never Too Early to Start Your Career Planning: Strategies for PGRs
Aston

Join us for an interactive full-day workshop designed specifically for postgraduate researchers! The workshop will explore effective career planning strategies, guiding you in establishing and reflecting on your personal and professional development goals while enhancing your networking skills. Whether you're contemplating a career in academia, industry, or alternative paths, this workshop will provide you with valuable tools and insights to navigate your future career journey. You will also have the opportunity to connect with fellow postgraduate researchers over lunch and share insights.

Morning Session: Managing Your Career Planning (10:00-12:30)
An essential part of your growth as a postgraduate researcher involves assessing both your immediate and long-term developmental needs during your research program, as well as considering your career goals. By understanding your skills, knowledge, and values, and by fostering self-awareness throughout this process, you can better identify development opportunities and strategically plan your career path.  This interactive workshop will give you the chance to assess your development needs and reflect on your skills, values, and ambitions. This will help ensure you make the most of the opportunities during your research degree and make informed career choices. Since most institutions use Training Needs Analysis (TNA) or Development Needs Analysis (DNA) to guide postgraduate researchers in creating a development plan, the workshop will also include tips on how to maximise your TNA/DNA plan for effective career planning.

Lunch (12:30-13:30) [A buffet lunch will be provided]

Afternoon Session: Building Connections for Your Career (13:30-16:00)
Networking is an important skill for researchers looking to establish meaningful connections and advance their careers. This session will help researchers reflect on their networking skills and explore effective networking, whether in academic settings or other professional contexts. Through a combination of interactive activities and practical insights, participants will learn how to approach networking with confidence, establish meaningful relationships and leverage their networks to support their research goals and career development.
