In three words or phrases how would you describe your supervision style?

Detail-oriented, student-centred, teaching

In one or two sentences please describe your strategies regarding the following.
Provision of training:

I will be responsible for guiding and mentoring you through all stages of your PhD. At the beginning, I will lend more support with developing your research, critical thinking and project management skills, so you can progressively become an independent researcher as you move towards the end of your PhD.

Progression monitoring and management:

I will hold 1-2-1 and team meetings with you on an ongoing basis in order to discuss your plans and findings. You will be encouraged to keep me informed of any interfering problem so they can be addressed at the earliest opportunity in order to ensure you can achieve your full potential.

Communication:

You can contact me at any time if you want to raise an issue or seek further advice. Nonetheless, I don’t expect you to respond to emails during the weekend or outside working hours, as I believe it is crucially important for you to maintain a healthy work/life balance; PhD is a marathon not a sprint!

How often do your PhD students see you in a timetabled group meeting?

At least once per fortnight

In year 1 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per week

In year 2 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per fortnight

In year 3 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per month

What form do your 1:1 meetings with PhD students take?

A mixture of face to face or via video chat or telephone.

Open door policy?

Yes, I am usually contactable for an instant response 3 or 4 days per week.

My expectation of PhD student working patterns?

Certain tasks in my lab need to occur at set times, and students need to be able to commit to a rota/timetable shared with other members of the team.

Notice for feedback (e.g. on reports, manuscript drafts, thesis chapters)?

I need at least 1 weeks’ notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
