In three words or phrases how would you describe your supervision style?

Supportive, Collaborative, Inclusive

In one or two sentences please describe your strategies regarding the following.
Provision of training:

Your technical training will initially be provided by me and my fantastic PhD students, and you will be expected to gain more independence throughout your PhD programme.

Progression monitoring and management:

We will discussion your progression in regular meetings (formally on a monthly basis, and informally on a more regular basis). I like to be kept up to date, and will expect to see evidence of results/data in these meetings. You will be more guided early on in your PhD, but you will be encouraged to come up with your own ideas as your programme progresses, and we can help troubleshoot any problems that arise together.

Communication:

We will communicate regularly in the lab and in group meetings, and in writing over email as necessary. I will expect you to manage your work/life balance, although I am of course happy to discuss any issues that are impacting your ability to fulfil your potential or expectations.

How often do your PhD students see you in a timetabled group meeting?

At least once per fortnight

In year 1 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per week

In year 2 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per week

In year 3 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per week

What form do your 1:1 meetings with PhD students take?

Face to face (if allowed under current health and safety advice)

Open door policy?

Yes, I am usually contactable for an instant response (if required) on every working day.

My expectation of PhD student working patterns?

I expect students to manage their own time, but due to safe working practices and the nature of the research, practical work must be predominantly focussed within normal building operations so that other people are present for safety reasons and to support each other as a group. For lab-based working, usual working hours (9-5, Mon-Fri) are standard, although there is definitely scope for flexibility if required.

Notice for feedback (e.g. on reports, manuscript drafts, thesis chapters)?

I need at least 1 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
