Who is your scientific inspiration and why?

My Post-doc supervisor. He provided opportunities, ideas, and there was always room to try something new.

In three words or phrases how would you describe your supervision style?

Inclusive, guiding, collaborative.

In one or two sentences please describe your strategies regarding the following.
Provision of training:

I adapt my strategies for supervision and training to the needs of the individual student. Some of the training (theoretical work, writing) I will provide myself, and some will be provided by more senior members of the lab or technical staff.

Progression monitoring and management:

I aim to meet my co-workers at least once weekly. I like to be kept up to date, and like to see evidence of progress (acquisition of new skills, reading/writing, results of practical work etc.) on a monthly basis.

Communication:

I can always be contacted by email, and any necessary meetings can be arranged on an ad-hoc basis.

In addition, the weekly group meetings provide an opportunity to raise any issues.

How often do your PhD students see you in a timetabled group meeting?

At least once per week

In year 1 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per fortnight

In year 2 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per month

In year 3 of PhD study, how often do your PhD students have a scheduled >30 minute 1:1 meeting with you?

At least once per month

What form do your 1:1 meetings with PhD students take?

A mixture of face to face or via video chat.

Open door policy?

No, my teaching timetable means this is not practical, I can only see people by appointment

My expectation of PhD student working patterns?

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice for feedback (e.g. on reports, manuscript drafts, thesis chapters)?

I need at least 2 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
