In three words or phrases how would you describe your supervision style?

Laid-back, technique-orientated, optimistic

In one or two sentences please describe your strategies regarding the following.
Provision of training:

Your training will be supervised predominantly by my experienced post docs/PhD students.

It’s Ok to try things for yourself and have them not work right-away – learn by doing.

I don’t blame you if things don’t work

Progression monitoring and management:

I am here for advice and guidance to help you reach the goals you set for yourself

My door is always open for a chat

You don’t have to tell me everything you have done in detail, I trust you to work independently

Communication:

I’ll email you at any time (I have young kids) but feel free to ignore me until you’re at work

I chat informally with my team by WhatsApp – about work and also socially

I am happy to discuss any issues that are impacting your ability to fulfil your potential

We try to get out for a drink together every week or so, Covid permitting

How often do your PhD students see you in a timetabled group meeting?

Open door policy?

Yes, I am usually contactable for an instant response (if required) on every working day.

My expectation of PhD student working patterns?

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice for feedback (e.g. on reports, manuscript drafts, thesis chapters)?

I need at least 2 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
