In three words or phrases how would you describe your supervision style?

I see my role as a supervisor as mentoring both in science and also career development. I like to think I am focused, supportive and easily accessible.

In one or two sentences please describe your strategies regarding the following.
Provision of training:

I am very hands-on in your project and provides initial training, with the support of my experienced post docs and PhD students when you start to become more independent. My group is very interdisciplinary, but also very supportive which provides an excellent training environment.

Progression monitoring and management:

I like to be kept up to date, and will expect to see evidence of method development/data generation results on a daily/weekly basis. We will also formally meet on a monthly basis to discuss longer terms targets, career aspirations and career development.

Communication:

I feel communication is one of the most important, if not the most important, aspect of research, and I encourage efficient communications within the group. I like to think I am easily approachable and make myself available to my group at any time. The team has a WhatsApp group chat with which we regularly communicate during the week (and sometimes weekends). Whilst I expect you to keep up with my/ team communications I will expect you to manage your work/life balance, for instance I would expect to only see important urgent messages out of normal working hours.

My expectation of PhD student working patterns?

The timing of work in my lab is completely flexible, and (other than attending pre-arranged meetings), I expect students to manage their own time.

Notice for feedback (e.g. on reports, manuscript drafts, thesis chapters)?

I need at least 2 week’s notice to provide feedback on written work of up to 5000 words.
