Cultural Tips

Here are a few top tips that we have collated during our travels to help you get feel for what it is like to work with some of the worlds countries. If you would like to see which organisations we are currently working with in each country please click the links. We are always keen to expand our list and share new experiences. Australia Time differences and note when the clocks change
China Present and receive buisiness cards with two hands, never one. Dress code: smart, professional.
USA Not visited so far
Belgium Generally relaxed working and dress code but dress smartly for meetings, especially at the EC itself.

Croatia Total university-wide closedown (including administration) over the summer! Also, changing laws on employment and funding for scientific researchers making financial mangaement complicated.
Czech Republic Not visited so far
Denmark Never assume two people at regional Scandinavian universities are geographically close (our team leader lives 600km from campus….)

Finland Never assume two people at regional Scandinavian universities are geographically close (our team leader lives 600km from campus….)
Georgia Not visited so far
Germany Very good English. Need chasing for information butrespond well to specific deadlines
Greece Working with publically-funded bodies in meltdown economies with stringent austerity-measure budget cuts can be challenging.
Hungary Very beautiful place- lots of great restaurants.
Italy Don't order milky coffee drinks (latte, cappuccino) after 11 am- the Italians consider these drinks to be unfashionable especially after meals, where an espresso is the only stylish, "acceptable", option.

Latvia Not visited so far
Malawi Bureaucracy very heavy at the Ministry of Health. Be prepared for unconventional handshake.
Netherlands At the start ask for an English translation for "out of office" messages and that any documents (including supporting docs) be sent in English
Northern Ireland Not visited so far
Norway Norway is very expensive, so be prepared. A can of coke can set you back around £4.50, a standard glass of wine £9.00

Russia Beware local Russian politics and impenetrable University administrative functions.
Singapore It is very hot and wet here, you would be best to pack accordingly as unexpected, huge showers can hit at any time. Otherwise, very fun and stylish, similar working styles to UK, but always dress smart despite the weather

South Africa Not visited so far
Spain Bit of Spanish will help you a lot;
Sweden They like prompt responses and ask for an English translation for "out of office" messages
Tanzania Superstrength insect repellant
UK Always try to be on time- the Brits love that!
