WES IC is focussed on understanding complex communities; how they interact, their genetic diversity, and resilience to anthropogenic or climatic impacts. Organisms continually interact with their environment and function as part of a community, whether it is bacteria in our gut, the microbiome on a plant root in the soil, or the assemblage of plant and animal communities that have adapted to the human environment. The study of these systems presents considerable technical challenges and can only be adequately addressed through an interdisciplinary approach to enable the study of all component parts of a system and interrogate the ways in which they interact.
