Academic Foundation Programme success for Warwick students

academic

Warwick Medical School has been ranked joint second in the country in a list of the medical schools whose students have been the most successful in applying to join the Academic Foundation Programme.

The Academic Foundation Programme is a very competitive programme which gives Foundation doctors the opportunity to take time out of their clinical training to conduct one or more scholarly activities in research, medical education or leadership.

This year, 67% of our students who applied for the programme received an offer (22 offers), meaning we have been ranked second in the country for the percentage of offers made, alongside the University of Oxford. Lancaster University comes top, with five of their applicants out of six receiving an offer.

Two years ago, we introduced a programme of support to help our students articulate their achievements when applying to this programme and we’re delighted that our ranking has increased significantly as a result.

Professor Colin MacDougall, Head of Medical Education at Warwick, said:

“I was delighted to hear how well our 2018 finalists did in their applications for academic foundation programmes this year. Whilst some will have been disappointed, two thirds of those who applied were offered places. This is really great news. Warwick students have always done well in foundation post applications overall, but have not done as well with academic programmes. Indeed we used to be 27th in the UK for percentage offered an academic programme, but are now joint second, along with Oxford! Well done to all and personal thanks to Emily Reid (Senior Careers Consultant) who has been working very hard on all aspects of careers support for the school, and has been particularly working with academic applicants over the last few years."

Congratulations to all of our students who have received a place on the Academic Foundation Programme, and thank you to everyone who has helped them in their applications.
