Warwick Medical School receives Athena SWAN Bronze Award

Warwick Medical School (WMS) has become the first UK medical school to receive an Athena SWAN Bronze award for its school-wide work supporting the Charter for Women in Science.

The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology in higher education and research.

In the award letter, representatives from the Athena SWAN awarding panel commended the work that had gone into the submission: “Warwick is the first medical school to receive Athena SWAN recognition at a school-wide level, which makes this a landmark achievement.”

Dean of WMS, Professor Peter Winstanley, said: “We are thoroughly delighted with our Bronze Award. It is a fitting recognition of our efforts to change and improve our practices so that women in the fields of science and medicine are supported and encouraged to drive forward advancements across our teaching practice and health research, ultimately resulting in improvements in patient treatment and care.

“I am extremely proud of the calibre and the expertise of both our staff and students at Warwick but recognise that we still have more to do to ensure we always foster a culture where women are given every opportunity to fulfil their potential. Receiving the Bronze Award will make us even more committed to pursue innovative ways of working that offer a stimulating, engaging and inclusive work place.”
