Minimally Glycated apoB-100 in LDL has Increased Atherogenic Potential

Work led by Dr Naila Rabbani of Protein Damage and Systems Biology group showed that apoB100 minimally glycated with low concentrations of methylglyoxal in vitro was bound more strongly by proteoglycans, and had an altered shape that increased the particle density.

The work was hailed as presaging the characterization of a type of LDL with a raised atherogenic potential that may explain the link between diabetes and increased incidence of cardiovascular disease. The paper received wide press coverage.
