Starting your career in General Practice

WMS is a great place to start your career in GP

General Practice is embedded in the thinking and delivery of undergraduate medical teaching at Warwick Medical School.

You will gain experience of General Practice in teaching placements throughout the course. Most recently we have a new General Practice specialist placements in Year 3/4. Additional opportunities to explore General Practice in more depth include opportunities for doing Special Study (Student Selected Components SSC2) projects with members of the Warwick Primary Care team.

Students doing primary care projects gain added experience of the General Practice setting, and how they can be part of shaping its future. Recent students have presented their work at the national RCGP conference, as well as meetings of the Society for Academic Primary Care.

We welcome students wanting to do their Elective with us in the 4th year . Students have worked with us on a range of projects including developing and evaluating educational materials, as well as new research into developing generalist expertise.

Our students lead a thriving GP Student Society , which is supported by the Midland Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Warwick Primary Care is a multidisciplinary team of academics and clinicians delivering innovative work to drive improvement in primary care through education and research. The group includes a number of academic GPs – doing both research and teaching – who would be pleased to talk with you about the career opportunities in GP including portfolio career options.

Warwick Primary Care leads cutting edge scholarship on the practice of generalism. WMS is developing innovative educational and research programmes that recognise and support expert generalism at the heart of future health service redesign.
