Brain, science and society: Promoting understanding of the complexities and dilemmas of first episode psychosis through the ethnodrama CRACKED in workshops, performances and Cafés Scientifiques

Prof Gillian Hundt has been awarded a People Award, through the Public Engagement with Science Programme of the Wellcome Trust, for the project 'Brain, science and society: Promoting understanding of the complexities and dilemmas of first episode psychosis through the ethnodrama CRACKED in workshops, performances and Cafés Scientifiques'.

The project will involve the staging of a touring production of CRACKED by the playwright Mike Kenny with poetry by Julie Boden, in the autumn of 2015, using drama, poetry and visual media to stimulate interest and debate about first episode psychosis - a hugely important area for mental health. The play will draw on the completed NIHR ENRICH research programme, which was led by Prof Swaran Singh, and will examine the help-seeking strategies and understandings of psychosis from the perspectives of carers and cared-for individuals from diverse ethnic groups.

The production will involve different groups of young people with professional actors in each location and will include workshops and post-show panel discussions which will stimulate debate and raise awareness of the complexity of experiences and multiple understandings of psychosis. The tour is in the planning stages and is expected to be performed at theatres in Nottingham, Birmingham, London, Coventry and Glasgow.
