Dr Carol Hawley is Principal Research Fellow in the Division of Mental Health and Wellbeing. She has a first degree and a PhD in Psychology. Chair of the International Paediatric Brain Injury Society (IPBIS), and Chair of the Special Interest Group on Driving which is part of the World Federation of Neurorehabilitation (WFNR). Previous member of the Topic Selection Panel for Long-term Conditions for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). She joined Warwick Medical School in 2004, having held previous posts in Warwick Business School. She has led a range of projects, including research into service delivery and service development and into organisational and clinical decision making. She has led a programme of research into medical aspects of fitness to drive for the Department for Transport. She has completed a large multi-method and multi-professional study of attitudes of health care professionals to giving advice to patients regarding their fitness to drive. She has considerable experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders and of conducting research in various settings, including GP practices, NHS hospitals, private hospitals, rehabilitation centres, nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals and secure forensic psychiatric units. She has experience of teaching and training medical students and health and social care professionals. She has considerable experience of disseminating the results of research to stakeholders, policy-makers, and those responsible for implementing the recommendations of research. In particular, she has worked with and disseminated research findings to members of the general public, charities and voluntary organisations. Recent projects have been in the field of driving, carried out in association with the Institute of Advanced Motoring, the College of Optometrists and Road Safety Analysis. Previous research on driving was carried out with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL). PhD supervisor in the area of paediatric brain injury.
