Research Interests

My initial research was in the use of 3D MR for radiotherapy planning in the prostate. While I have maintained an interest in Onocolgy imaging much of my research has been in Osteoarthritis and in image modelling. Currently I am involved in an OA study with Manchester (Dr Callaghan, Prof O'Neill and Prof Cootes) and Boston (Prof Felson); a study in modelling wrist motion with Dr Graham in Manchester; In imaging in Scleroderma with Prof Herrick in Manchester; and modelling the bowel motion in Sclerosing Peritonitis (Dr Summers) in Manchester. In the University of Warwick I am looking at the changes seen on CT in Interstitial fibrosis, the patterns of change seen in prothesis loosening on PET-CT imaging and characterising MR in Brown Fat imaging and in Myositis. We are setting up fMRI imaging with UHCW.

I trained in Medicine at the University of Birmingham, undertaking an intercalated degree in Medical Biochemistry (1977) and qualified in Medicine (1980). I trained in radiology in the West Midlands (1985-1990) moving to Manchester University as the CRC research fellow in 1991. I undertook an MD in MR imaging. In 1995 I was appointed as Senior lecturer at the University of Manchester and honorary Consultant Radiologist at Salford Royal Hospital. I was initially College of Radiologists Educational Advisor to the North West training Scheme and was finally their Head of Training. I was Professor of Radiology in 2010 at the University of Manchester. I was appointed as the Chair of Imaging at the University of Warwick in October 2010. Currently I am chair of the ICAT (Integrated Clinical Academic Training)
