Jonathan Fenn

Biography

Jonathan undertook a BSc in Biomedical Science at the School of Life Sciences, University of Warwick, and was awarded a First Class honours. He completed a summer project and final year project supervised by Professor Mohan Balasubramanian where he established a HaloTag® system to visualise cytokinetic fluorescent protein localisations in the fission yeast Saccharomyces pombe, and a yeast-two-hybrid system to probe for novel cell-cycle protein interactions. Following his BSc he joined the Medical Research Council doctoral training programme at Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, and undertook an MSc in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research and was awarded a Distinction honours. Throughout the programme Jonathan developed an interest in antimicrobial resistance and a particular fascination in protein biochemistry and macromolecular crystallography. He undertook an MSc project supervised by Professor David Roper where he identified key structural moieties essential for the catalytic activity of penicillin-binding proteins, important antibiotic targets.

Current Status

Jonathan progressed to a PhD supervised by Dr Elizabeth Fullam and Professor Alex Cameron, School of Life Sciences, University of Warwick, and is currently working towards investigating the nutrient uptake mechanisms of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the globally important human pathogen and causative agent of tuberculosis disease. Throughout the course of his PhD Jonathan has developed extensive skills in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Structural Biology. He has worked at the Diamond Light Source, Oxfordshire, to solve X-ray co-crystal structures and in 2018 he presented this work at the Astbury Conversation Conference at the University of Leeds and was awarded the poster prize. He later presented at the MRC DTP conference and was awarded the PhD presentation prize. Jonathan is a STEM ambassador and has organised several successful public engagement events with the Fullam lab in recognition of World Tuberculosis Day. Jonathan is more than happy to discuss his experiences in the MRC DTP programme with prospective students.
