Fees and funding

If you are a Home student enrolling in 2023/24, your annual tuition fees will be £9,250. In the future, these fees might change for new and continuing students.

The UK has now formally left the EU. Students from the EU, EEA and Switzerland who start their programme of study in 2021 or later will no longer be eligible for the UK (Home) fee status and will pay fees at the Overseas rate.

Fees for Overseas Students for 2023/24 are £27,290 for year 1 and £47,580 for each of years 2, 3 and 4.

The University may increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course.

Important: UK Government response to the consultation "Expansion of Undergraduate Medical Education 2017"

The UK Government originally indicated that, “from 2018/19 new international students studying at English universities will be expected to fund their own placements” pg 12Link opens in a new window  ; this was later clarified as "following feedback the Government will continue to fund clinical placements for international students commencing study at English universities whilst it undertakes further cross-government work on implementation" pg 7Link opens in a new window

We continue to monitor the situation and will update this information as we receive updates from the UK Government.

Maintenance support and bursaries

First year medical students who are ordinarily resident in England and Wales can apply to Student Finance England for financial support towards living costs. Eligible students are entitled to a maintenance loan which is partially means-tested (max £8,944). Due to your previous study you will not be eligible for most University scholarships and bursaries. However, the Warwick Bursary is available to first year MB ChB students - this will be awarded automatically if you are eligible.

In years two to four of study, to help with your living costs, you can apply for a means-tested bursary and a non means-tested grant towards your living costs from the NHS. You may also be eligible for a maintenance loan at a reduced rate from Student Finance England (non means-tested).

Students living in Northern Ireland and Scotland should contact the relevant Students Awards AgencyLink opens in a new window for information on the funding available.

Students living in the EU may be eligible for help towards their tuition fee costs and should contact the European Team at the Student Loans Company. EU students are not normally entitled to the maintenance element of the NHS bursary. International students do not qualify for any UK government financial support

Students with children and students with disabilities will be eligible for targeted support such as a Childcare grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance or Disabled Students’ Allowances.

The Warwick Undergraduate Bursary

If you meet certain eligibility criteria you may be able to get an undergraduate bursary in your first year of medical school. The Warwick bursary, which is non repayable, provides extra financial support for qualifying students from lower income families. Awards up to £2000 per year are paid directly to students to help with your living costs. Some students may also be eligible for an additional bursary of £1000. To find out if you are eligible for the Warwick Bursary, please visit the student funding webpages

Warwick Medical School and WPH Charitable Bursaries

The WPH Charitable Trust and Warwick Medical School support a competitive bursary scheme for MB ChB students from a widening participation background or where unexpected or exceptional student hardship is anticipated. Typically a small number of awards up to £3000 are available each year to students joining in the first year.

Additional Costs

In addition to your tuition fees, you will need to consider funding for your accommodation, travel to your placements and general living costs over the next four years. In addition students are expected to purchase a stethoscope, pen torch and laboratory coat.

Personal Electronic Devices

All year 1 students will receive a loan IPad or IPad mini and Apple pencil which you keep for the four years you study with us (returnable at the end of the course). If you are thinking of upgrading your current personal device, please see our guidance on recommended device specifications. We also have two large computer suites on the Gibbet Hill campus and further quiet study is available in the Central Library.

Journals and Textbooks

The University has a broad range of journals and textbooks available in the University Library and BioMed Learning Grid, and as electronic text books. You may wish to consider not buying any books until you have had a look at a few in the library to see which ones work best for you.

Disclosures and Barring Services (DBS)

Students offered a place on the MB ChB programme will be required to submit a Disclosures and Barring Services (DBS) Enhanced check upon admission. Please note that you will need to meet the cost of the DBS check yourself, currently £57 (2022).

Immunisation and Vaccinations

We advise applicants on the vaccinations that a student is required to have completed. If these are administered pre-admission they may incur a personal cost. After admission, the Occupational Health provider will administer any vaccinations to complete the full requirements free of charge.

Travel to Clinical Placements

Students will primarily be on clinical attachments in acute hospital settings in Coventry, Nuneaton, Rugby and Warwick. Primary Care and Community placements are approximately within a 40 mile radius of Warwick Medical School. Students are responsible for their own travel arrangements between placements. Those students eligible for the NHS Bursary will be able to re-claim travel some expenses from year two onwards.

Scrubs and Dress code

Our NHS partners operate a bare-below the elbow policy. All year 1 students will receive two sets of medical student ward scrubs which you can wear on clinical placement and are yours to keep. Additional items can be purchased at your own cost. Please refer to our dress code policy for further information.

The Elective

Students in their final year will undertake an elective of their choosing, which could be either home or abroad, for which some costs will be incurred. The cost of the Elective is at your own expense, however, there are a number of Elective bursaries available to support students.

Graduation

You should also remember your graduation and the cost of hiring your gown for your degree ceremony.

Clubs and Societies

Whilst at University you may wish to join clubs and societies and these may have a membership or subscription fee attached to them.

Paid work whilst studying

Whilst some students find paid work whilst studying can be an option, you should not underestimate the demands of the programme which should be considered at least comparable to full-time work i.e. 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. As you progress through your course, your study will require an increasingly significant time commitment throughout the week, and term times will lengthen.

The University has its own temporary employment agency, Unitemps, and some students find work as NHS bank staff or HCAs.

Conference Attendance and Publications

Warwick Medical School offers an academic bursary twice per year to support conference attendance for medical students who have had their work accepted or for students seeking to secure funding for accepted publications. Small grants of up to £200 are available to support either conference presentation or publication.

Nursery and Childcare

The University has an on-campus nursery facility that students with children can access. The prices associated with this can be found on the nursery website. Please bear in mind that the nursery is very popular and it is therefore recommended to book a place as soon as possible.
