The module is runs in term 1 with all lecture materials delivered by external, industrial polymer scientists on a Thursday. After each lecture you will write a 300 word 'mini-essay' described two related papers in the field. Additionally, working with an academic, you will write a mini review article. Following submission of a first draft and revision, a final article will be submitted by the end of term 1. You will also be expected to attend the department of Chemistry External Seminar series, which also happens every thursday
This module aims to demonstrate current and real-world applications of polymeric materials that have been described in other modules of the Polymer Chemistry taught master program and rationalize how different properties are required for different applications. This module will be delivered by internal and invited external lecturers from industry and academia. Topics covered will include: Polymer in medicine, polymer in energy, advanced polymer processing methods, polymer composite materials, polymer in everyday applications, renewable materials. It will also include insight from academic publishers and also an insight into the patenting process and intellectual property. This module also helps you practise writing scientific abstracts and accessing the scientific literature.
