Goran Mahmood is originally from Kurdistan (north of Iraq). He obtained his BSc and MSc degrees at Salahaddin University in Hawler. After being awarded his BSc degree, he worked as a research assistant in Chemistry for two years before starting an MSc degree. His Masters project was supervised by Prof. Dlawar M Sabir and entitled “Isolation, purification and characterisation of hypoglycaemic active compounds in Medicago sativa”. After completing his MSc degree in 2004 Goran worked as a demonstrator for one year in the Chemistry Department at Salahaddin University.
Since 2005 he moved to Sulaimani University working as demonstrator in the Chemistry Department until 2011. He is now a PhD student in the lab of Prof. Timothy Bugg working on the discovery of novel lignin degrading enzymes from soil bacteria. His PhD is sponsored by the Kurdistan regional government as part of the Human Capacity Development Program known as the HCDP- scholarship.
