"Probing Bacterial Toxin Inhibition with Synthetic Glycopolymers Prepared by Tandem Post-Polymerization Modification: Role of Linker and Carbohydrate Density" link

This papers describes the us of tanden post-polymerization modification to precisely control the separation of carbohydrate and backbone in glycopolymers. This seperatation allows the carbohydrates to better access the deep binding pocket of the cholera toxin (B-subunit) increasing inhibitory activity. Conversely, another lectin (PNA) showed no sensitivity to the length of the linker, indicating that this is a powerful method to improve glycan seletivity without the need for complex cabohydrate synthesis.

This paper shows a novel method to conjugate synthetic polymers to Native proteins. Dibromomaleimide's were incorporated at polymer chain ends, which allows them to insert into native disulfide linkages without affecting the proteins secondary structure. This method is far more versatile then traditional non-specific functionalisation (e.g active esters) and removes the need for genetically-engineered proteins. This technology will be used to improve the pharmocokinetic profiles therapeutically relevant proteins in the near future.

This paper describes our initial findings that mannose-rich glycopolymers can inhibit the interactions between DC-SIGN and the viral capsid protein, GP120. This demonstrates that synthetic polymers might find applicaiton in the inhibition of HIV infection

 

Gibson, M.I., Paripovic, D., Klok, H.-A., Advanced Materials, 2010, 22, 4721-4725, "Size Dependant LCST Transitions of Polymer-Coated Gold Nanoparticles: Co-operative Aggregation and Surface Assembly" link

Here we designed and synthesised a range of 'smart' nanoparticles which can respond to changes in temperature. This change normally results in precipitation, but we demonstrated that it was possible to use temperature to guide the assembly of nanoparticles onto complemntary surfaces, in a fully reversible manner.

In this work we demonstrate, for the first time, that it is possible to combine the two most famous structures in protein science - the alpha-helix and beta-sheet in a single block copolypeptide using NCA polymerization. These peptides were capable of undergoing supramolecular self-organisation to form extended fibres giving them remarkable organogelation properties.

This is the first independant publication of the newly formed Gibson Group at the University of Warwick. It summarises developments and trends in the application of synthetic polymers as biomimetics of Antifreeze Proteins - This is a key area of the Gibson group's reserach and several major publications are in preparation

Cited almost 100 times.

This review article summarise the synthetic routes to obtain glycopolymers - polymers with pendant carbohydrate chains. This was the first effort to collect together and compare post-polymerization routes to these materials, which is now a hot topic in Polymer Chemistry

This review article collates together a full range of synthetic techniques which are suitable for post-polymerization modification. At the time of publication, it was the most complete review of the area, which included the so called 'click' reactions. This is now used as a point of references for researchers seeking to optimise these reactions in the search of new 'click' chemistries
