In October 2010 i joined Prof. Troisi group at the university of Warwick where i am currently studying organic solar cells focusing in particular on the theory of long range electron transfer at the interface. A complete curriculum vitae is available here (PDF Document).

Organic Solar Cells

The first example of an organic solar cell with an efficient photogeneration, the process of charge creation upon light absorption, dates back to 1986, when Tang achieved the first organic solar cell with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.1%. Since then the efficiencies of organic solar cells continued to raise up and by now the best PCE is 7.4%, making closer the limit for commercial use that is around 10%.

The first step in the functioning of an organic solar cell is the harvesting of light by the donor material, this is why it is crucial that there is has a good spectral overlap with the solar radiation. Upon light absorption, an electron from the HOMO of the donor molecule is excited to the LUMO forming the so-called exciton. It is generally assumed that the exciton reaches the donor-acceptor interface by diffusion where it can dissociate in a Coulombically bound hole-electron pair. Afterwards the charges are collected at the electrodes.

However, simple theories indicate that the hole-electron pair attraction is too strong to allow separation before de-excitation, considering the low dielectric constant of the media. Understanding why the generation of free charges can be so efficient is clearly a key prerequisite to understand the difference between good and bad solar cells and to design better ones.

Unlike the common theories that assume that the hole-electron pair is generated at the interface, in my current research i am studying the possibility that an exciton, located at a certain distance from the interface, can also dissociate into a hole and electron that are already partially separated.
