I am working on the following projects at the moment:

  • Application of fragment-based drug discovery to selected targets from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, including dihydrofolate reductase and enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of the cell wall and cell division;
  • Structural basis of resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis do clinically used antimicrobials, such as isoniazid en pyrazinamide
  • Structural investigation of key enzymes from the biosynthesis of aminoglycosides, particularly gentamicins.
  • Structural investigation of cyclases such as epoxide hydrolases, epoxidases and Diels-Alderases in the biosynthesis of polyether ionophores

I am currently interested in structural biology applied to natural product biosynthesis and in strategies of drug development, particularly fragment-based drug discovery against tuberculosis.


I am supervising the following PhD students:

  • Tim Kirman on the application of fragment-based drug discovery to the Dihydrofolate reductase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis
