Session 1 - Introduction to Linux

Session Objectives:

By the end of this session you should be able to:
  1. give a reasonable definition of what linux is
  2. navigate your way around a linux system
  3. create, move, copy and delete files and directories
  4. set up local initialisation files
  5. run, kill, suspend and background jobs
  6. apply simple local and remote operations to files and directories
  7. use a number of simple linux utilities
  8. write and run shell scripts
  9. demonstrate a familiarity with utility packages, eg for plotting
  10. use emacs as a file editor
