Quantum information processing with light offers the possibility of advanced technologies for computing and simulation, running at high clock-rates in ambient conditions. However logic operations are non-deterministic and require some way of storing photons in order to be scalable. I am investigating the possibility of using Brillouin scattering to convert photons into acoustic waves (phonons) inside a diamond, as a means of light storage. The work draws on recent progress in optomechanics and quantum memories, and could find applications in conventional photonic switching as well as in the quantum domain.
