Paper 2

Hello all!

Welcome back to Journal Club. We hope you enjoyed the last paper on negative emissions technologies.

This week we have a paper on a completely different topic; bridge collapses. Despite comprehensive design and building regulations, bridge collapses continue to happen and of course often the results are catastrophic. This was highlighted recently by the high profile Morandi Bridge collapse on the 14th August 2018.

The paper this week highlights all the possible reasons why bridges collapse. We then ask you to do some of your own research and find out why two specific bridges collapsed and what could have been done to prevent it!

The two high profile bridge collapses we ask you to research are the Morandi Bridge Collapse in Italy and the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse in the USA.

We hope this paper highlights some of the current challenges in engineering, and why research into bridge structures remains an important research topic.

As always, you will find some questions within the ‘supporting material’ document, and we encourage you to submit your answers for a chance to be published on the Warwick University Engineering web-page.

Looking forward to the responses,

Journal Club Team :)
