Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To prepare students for working effectively individually and in teams to complete the MSc course and in preparation for their careers in industry.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to: • Identify and evaluate information presenting the output in a well-structured and appropriately referenced literature survey. • Critically evaluate data and present the information in a well-reasoned and presented report having a recognised technical structure. • Demonstrate inter-cultural communication awareness through understanding and applying relevant concepts and frameworks • Evaluate and communicate complex information via oral presentation. • Work constructively as a team to address a public concern; to evaluate a complex issue and provide a sound, systematic and accessible presentation of that issue to a public audience; appraise and effectively respond to team and cultural issues.

Timetabled teaching activities

21 hrs lectures, 9 hrs seminars. Total of 30 hours.

Other essential notes

The module is taught in a five-day intensive block (excluding Wednesday afternoon). The module is available to students on more than one programme. Assignment questions will be tailored to be appropriate to the student’s programme. The module is different to the standard technical module in that it is delivered in unison with Centre for Applied Linguistics and differences in assessment methods will be apparent.
