The EPS team visit Prodrive at their composites facility

Three members of the EPS team (Adam Lord, Louise Waters and Felicity Kendrick) went to visit Matthew Bradney, the composites sales manager at Prodrive. Their composites facility is based in Milton Keynes. We were able to discuss the progress of the project in some detail, and communicate some clear decisions about the design of the solar panels. For instance, it is now a clear-cut decision that we will be using carbon fibre panels (rather than Aluminium panels) with an interstitial layer of Aluminium honeycomb. At the composites facility, they are able to design and fabricate very complex parts from carbon fibre - so a flat panel should be relatively straightforward. Finding the carbon fibre in the first place is still an issue to be resolved. After a tour of the facility, we were enlightened about the way that the layering and treating process works, and encouraged by Mr. Bradney's enthusiasm and support for the project. We look forward to working with Prodrive in the future and are grateful for Mr. Bradney giving up his time to focus on our solar arrays in detail. Mr. Bradney raised the possibility of a visit to observe the manufacture of a solar panel, and that we were welcome to re-visit and observe the process.
