Module content and teaching
Principal aims
To provide an advanced course in fluid dynamics which will enable students to learn about complex fluidic systems and how to quantify these. This aim reflects the research strengths and activities of the Fluid Dynamics Research Centre within the School of Engineering. The course will build on the material studied in previous modules taught in the School. It will provide students with the opportunity to apply their existing knowledge of mechanics to new fields. It will then build on these principles to develop specialist learning in the subject in fluid dynamics and related areas of engineering interest
Principal learning outcomes
The module consists of four parts. The module subsets areas are: The Aerodynamics of Wings and Bodies, Turbulent flow, Biofluid Dynamics, and Flow Measurement.
By the end of the module the student should be able to
- Autonomously evaluate flight and similar fluid flow models, then apply and extrapolate these to perform complex evaluations of fluidic systems.
- Interpret results generated by advanced computational techniques to relevant flow problems.
- Conceptualize complex relations between parameters of the flows and the functioning of whole systems.
- Critique the modelling techniques used to predict aerodynamic characteristics of objects;
- Use current concepts to analyse, measure and predict turbulent flows of engineering and environmental interest;
Critically evaluate modern techniques for measurements in fluid flows, and the under-pinning working principles of the measurement techniques.
