Professor Peter Thomas
The project: Experimental Research Projects in Fluid Dynamics and Beyond ...
The projects I offer are mainly in the area of experimental fluid dynamics. However, in the past, I have also run collaborative PhD projects supervised together with other academics involving computational aspects of fluid dynamics.
One of my main areas of interest is the dynamics of rotating fluids. Effects arising from the action of the Coriolis force in rotating flows lead to many highly counter-intuitive phenomena that are entirely absent in the non-rotating counterpart of any flow.
Nevertheless, I also run many PhD projects investigating aspects other than rotating flows. Some other areas of interest are the vast topic of vortex dynamics, vortex-structure interactions, boundary-layer flow, particle-laden flow, or granular flows
In recent years I have also collaborated with colleagues supervising projects outside of fluid dynamics. This includes, for instance, projects in acoustics and research related to metamaterials.
In summary, specific research topics for a PhD are best discussed with the applicants. Please get in touch with me if you would like to discuss options in any of the above subject areas or beyond. ...
