Important information before you apply:

Before you apply as a visiting research student it is important that you have sought approval from your current academic supervisor from your current institution. You will also to have been in communication with a named member of staff in the School of Engineering to agree the date, duration and the purpose of your visit.

We do not accept speculative applications for Visiting PhD Students.

To enrol as a Visiting PhD Student, you need to submit an application for admission and obtain an unconditional offer.

NOTE 1: Please note that each department has a quota for visiting students and cannot exceed this number without express permission from the Chair of the Board of Graduate Studies.The maximum period a research student can visit the University is normally 12 months.

NOTE 2: This application process is not suitable for the following.

  • Erasmus+, Internship or Traineeship placement,
  • Undergraduate visiting students

Required documentation

  • Official student status letter from your current institution. This should contain evidence of the qualification that you are currently pursuing and the start and end date of that registration.
  • A letter from your current academic supervisor or Head of Department at your home institution, the letter should confirm that you are a current student at their University and provide support for your period of study at the University of Warwick.
  • A personal statement that explains the purpose of your visit to the School of Engineering should include the proposed start and end date of your visit and the name of the person you are requesting to visit/work with.
  • Your Bachelors or Masters degree certificate and transcript.
  • Proof of English language capability:

It is a requirement that overseas students will show that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from their time at Warwick.   • ATAS: If you are from outside the EU you may require ATAS clearance. Full instructions about this process and how to apply will be sent to you after an offer for admission is made. Please do not attempt to apply for your ATAS before you have received instructions from the University, as an incorrect application will invalidate your ATAS certificate and may cause delays.

                    Complete the online application form.

                    • Year: Select the date closest to your preferred start date in the future.
                    • Mode of Study: Full-time (you can select your specific dates later in the form and personal statement)
                    • Type of course: Visiting Research Student

                    Tuition Fees

                    No bench fees are charged.

                    No tuition fees are charged during the academic years 2023/24 and 2024/25. University term dates.Link opens in a new window

                    Visits are permitted for a minimum of one month to a maximum of 12 months only. You must confirm your intended start and end dates in your personal statement. Ensure the dates are realistic to your arrival, allowing for time for your offer to be processed and any visa implications. You must hold an unconditional offer from the University of Warwick before you can enrol.

                    Accommodation

                    The University of Warwick can sometimes offer on-campus accommodation, availability is limited and cannot be guaranteed. You need to organise accommodation yourself after you have received an offer letter for admission, please contact our Accommodation Office Team for further advice.
