Mark attended the University of Sheffield and completed a BSc in Physics in 1983. He then stayed on to complete a Ph.D in 1986. After university, he joined the Royal Signals and Research Establishment, later to become part of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), researching gallium arsenide (GaAs) devices and circuits. Soon after the privatisation of DERA to form QinetiQ, Mark became the cleanroom laboratory manager for the newly formed Emerging Technology Group which combined together all the electrical device and semiconductor material activities within the QinetiQ business.

In 2011, Mark moved to the University of Warwick to manage their newly established silicon carbide (SiC) device cleanroom. During his joining the university and up to the present, he has managed a major expansion of the cleanroom facility and capability, as well as overseeing the introduction of other material systems and processes, resulting in the cross-discipline semiconductor research activity that now exists.

As the semiconductor Research facility manager, Mark is responsible for all day to day operational activities of the facility. He is also responsible for ensuring that the facility meets all current and future capability requirements including planning, procurement and commissioning of new equipment and systems.
